Jan 9th-Reflection
Because this is going to be my last semester at Calvin, I really wanted to take an interim that would be more enjoyable than informative. Partially because of Senioritis rearing it's ugly head, and partly because in my two years here since I transferred, I had to take a DCM, and with the added work that came along with it, I felt I didn't get to enjoy the class as much as I wanted to. So, when I began to look through the courses that were being offered, I spent a large amount of time flip-flopping on which class I felt would be most enjoyable. I have a tough time making decisions, and I came to about three or four separate "final" choices that ended up being replaced by others in the end. But the one constant was this course, Games in Community. I had never been a board game person when I was growing up, instead devoting my time to video games. But, as time went on, the luster of games like Call of Duty and Halo wore off, and I found myself ending my play-throughs sooner and sooner. My friends and I would play games till late in the morning, but as we grew older we found less and less time to devote to playing together. Finally though, in the past year or so I was able to go home one weekend when a majority of my friends from high school were around. We ended up playing some board games together, and suddenly all of those hours of playing online came back, but with the added bonus of being together. I really began to see the positive effect games in person can bring to a group of people, and as the year went on I played more and more. I even joined a role-playing game, something I never would have considered until I saw how much fun playing a game in person could be. Legend of the Five Rings is now basically my crack, and I already have plans to play it whenever I go home. I'm really glad that in the end I decided to take this course, because I feel it will be a perfect way to wrap up my final interim at Calvin. I'll be able to play games but also grow closer to others I may not have ever had the chance to talk to, and that makes me extremely excited to see where this class leads.
